The usual problem with having a mage for your adc is you lose your usual source of physical DPS making it easier for the tanks to itemize against your team. While this might make the mid's ability to kill the tank harder, that shouldn't really be his job to begin with. And ap Varus is arguably the best anti tank in the game.
