Atleast I think. There are a lot of variables and it would be very time consuming, given the lengthy time between freighter battle spawns, to actually test what made this work. I never gathered my "free first freighter" while playing. I didnt even know that was a thing and just avoided the freighter battles.

The updates the past couple of years reduced the need for it to be an S-class freighter. I expanded my freighter with the storage containers so there's plenty of inventory space. Also, if you don't mind a reputation hit, you can become a space pirate for a while to get those additional inventory slots.
