It's meant to be really hard, give it a few tries. Try to go on a good luck day and eat something with luck buffs if you can. You need to just spam the bombs/ammo and hope to find some shafts cause those are really useful. You can have coffee with other foods and it won't overwrite the buffs, the speed really helps.

The mines are not the same as the Skull Cavern in this regard. Once you complete Danger in the Deep, you can deactivate the shrine to permanently make the mines dangerous. This does not affect the Skull Cavern. Likewise, Skull Invasion will not make the mines dangerous either. To fix this, you need to activate the shrine at the bottom of the mines.
