Since you're on single player you should be able to switch the game mode to pvp, then you can kill unclaimed babies. The crossbow can do a large amount of damage, especially in the higher ends. I've personally seen a journeyman (purple) with 200% damage, and ascendant's can go higher (alpha rex dropped one with 317% damage once). I can't tell how long it actually takes for things to respawn, it does seem to take quite a while though. Berry bushes respawn fairly quickly, while trees take somewhere between 5-6 hours from what I've seen.
