wand is a pre req for kodai, it is better to get it when you actually get useful xp from mta as oppose to later. mages book is also "bis" in the sense that arcane is a very very slow grind most irons do not get to - but mage offhands are very low value so your mages book will not get much use. but again, if you get it when you value magic xp then great.
