I am having a similar problem. I get an E74 error message several times each day. It usually lasts about 30 seconds and then it goes away. AnyI have had my nest installed for almost two years, and now today I'm getting an e74 RH wire that isn't connected. Never had this error message andR can be thought of as the "hot" wire while W acts as the "neutral" wire when the thermostat is calling for heat. Since it's just two wires completing a simple circuit, most thermostat don't care which terminals the "hot" and "neutral" wires are going to. No it works for typical heat / ac just fine. If you are using Rh, you will connect to C, R and W at the furnace. And the Rh and W wires from the thermostat connect to the other side of the adapter. The Nest will be able to draw power across R and W. Y and G won't be affected.
