Mindthief - The Mindthief works for this party in much the same way as the Scoundrel, providing a lot of melee damage with the space provided by the Brute and Tinkerer. The Mindthief provides a bit less damage but a bit more control than the Scoundrel. Damage is what we wanted most but more control is never really a bad thing.
He barely has any cards with decent movement abilities. Therefore I feel like I am always sacrificing an important card just to move him a few steps across the board. the mindthief is usually seen as a melee class cannon, this is 100% true for this guide. the goal of this build is to hit hard, while not getting hit back, as such it focuses on cc and dealing damage. the mindthief unique mechanic is the augment system. in practise there is only 1 augment (until level 9) with the other cards having an attack 2 on top.With a Brute you'll want the Tinkerer to take more of a supporting role (healing\manipulation) while the Scoundrel acts a bit more like an assassin (high damage to select targets). Mindthief gives you two decent assassins, good board control and the Tinkerer acting in more of a crowd control / artillery role as the situation demands.It has two situational halves - one being a loss, the other being a card that requires enemies to be around that does nothing to effect combat. It has poor initiative - the arguments for “mindthief needs late initiatives” notwithstanding, 68 isnt actually late. It fails at the one job you ask it to do.86, Harried Village – Retire a Mindthief to add a city event (47). In that event, the mindthief will ask a guard for help investigating the water being poisoned. Me and my partner started playing Gloomhaven last week, and had a difficult time choosing our characters for our campaign in two players. We enjoy a bit of a challenge and did not want to go for the traditional strong characters like the Cragheart or the Brute, which have aMove - less than the half of the cards give you movement, mostly 3-4 hexes with two exceptions in the entire deck - 8 range with jumps. Initiative - you have a single ultra-fast card (initiative 7) in the starting deck, few quick (between 20-30), most of your cards will be slow or very slow (60-90s), especially at the higher levels.On the guide front, I would really like us to have a guide done for every starting class before the second edition comes out. So with that said: Mindthief - I played him a little bit when I taught the game at Origins but not near enough to be confident with the class.
