At least you've gotten the e-mail about a bench test. I applied for multiple positions in my area. Couple of days after, on one of them, I got an e-mail saying that I'll be "be considered under the competitive procedures for this vacancy and advised of the application status when a decision has been reached" My application status says Pre-hire list.

Will do! They will throw you in right at the busiest time of the year. They really don't care. I accepted offer 9/23, got my official hire date email on 10/11 and orientation is scheduled for 10/23. There also appears to be a week between orientation and doing the academy, so things are pretty spread out. Interesting.
