I have the Geissele alignment rods in 5.56 and 7.62. Before getting them, I use to just look down the barrel and/or receiver. Regardless, I was always nervous for the first few rounds about a baffle strike. For the price of the alignment rods, I considered it worthwhile for some peace of mind and a little insurance to avoid a baffle strike.

Solid end cap strike first time out. .30 cal baffles with a .556 end cap, so I could see how the end cap could get a strike while the baffles remain fine. I just wrap the baffle tube with copper screen wire, filling up the sleeve area. Those filaments do a lot towards reducing the heat and pressure of those gases. By the time they can bounce off of the front of the can and go back over the screen, to follow the other gases out of the baffle stack, they' have lost a lot of their blast and heat.

Baffle strikes can absolutely happen if a bullet isn't stabilized. This is part of the reason why some cans aren't rated for some cartridges even when you think they might be. For example, most cans rated for .300 blk subs aren't rated for .308 subs. Same bullet, same speed, but poor stability.

I have been told by several people (one that works for AAC, answered the phone when I called), that 55gr ammunition from my 1/7 12.5" barrel is more likely to cause a baffle-strike than something 62gr and up.
