In my experience, each away converted to an interview, and I ended up matching at a program I rotated with. Categorical just means an integrated intern year, it is not specific to just IM. Most derm programs are advanced (not integrated), but there are a few categorical derm programs that integrate the intern year into the program.It sucks from a networking/fun perspective but is much better from a cost perspective.
