The main reason to run Caltrops on dps is AoE Major Breach. The DoT is a nice bonus, and the slow is mostly desired by tanks grouping trash. OP is a necromancer, so they can use Unnerving Boneyard to get AoE Major Breach. The damage will be lower than Caltrops, since they're stamcro instead of magcro, but that's not a huge deal.
