Well, the only real strategy is to be prepared and adaptable to challenges. Ensure you are well defended proportional to your wealth, always be sure to have enough food and resources around when things get tough, have a backup plan in case the worst happens, etc. ect.

I believe the hits only count if it's a critter than you can gain experience from. some workaround way for me is to use scroll of transmutation (metamorphosis) on the 1st tier talent and with a bit of luck, you might get the warrior's talent where you can identify weapon and armor by equipping it.
