Personally I would go with Spear for the range, but Axe would fit a Nord bruiser build better. This expands your weapon options early in the game, and would give you more powerful items to play around with in the late game.

Also, if you like magic in other TES games you'll LOVE magic in Morrowind (just keep your fatigue up or you'll be wasting a lot of magicka).
