Hi Ron, The TAS prefix dates to late 1986, and TBR dates to 1988. According to the Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition, the first serial range was TAK0001-TAK7727. p.s. You commented on the pic of my 645 in another post. The walnut stocks did not come on it from the factory. The under barrel matches and there should be a serial on the rear face of the cylinder and on the back of the right grip panel (just numbers) that match the butt. I can't answer why S&W doesn't make serial number lookup available. The Automatic Serial number range started in 1954 with SN 1001. This includes the pre-39s, 39s, 41s, 46s, and all that followed. The original production / sales of the automatic series took off slowly. Somewhere around SN 109xxx, started the A-prefix.

The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson is between 1945 & 1948. It is a post war Transitional Model. They were built between the end of WW2 and the start of the C series serials in 1948. The long action end in 1950, for the M&P models.
