Smoky Hills Public Television (SHPTV) was incorporated March 10, 1978, under the auspices of the Kansas Public Television Board.The station was originally to be licensed on Channel 14 as part of a 10 year plan to extend public television to unserved areas of Central and Western Kansas, broadcasting educational television and PBS programming.When The Nature Conservancy purchased Smoky Valley Ranch in 1999, it was the largest land acquisition for conservation in state history. At that time, several parcels had been carved out of the ranch, sold to other buyers and converted to cropland. In 2020, the final piece was purchased, making the 18,000-acre ranch whole again.
