As the other response mentioned, it's early access. More than that, it's early in its early access phase. The game is stable, and while there are both awkward design decisions like the one being discussed and basic functionalities that've been overlooked, such as a labor manager, these things are being worked on. We're getting that last bit in the next update, for instance.
