The default drop rate is not very good. If you need a lot of essence I actually would say watch for the small maps! The really small Grineer ship defense map (Hydron, I think Berehynia if it's interception?), Hyf Deimos defense and other small maps give a really good amount of essence because the drones get killed and cycle back in a lot faster.
